Opening Doors featured an evening showcasing the growth and innovation of North Coast Community Homes. NCCH was incorporated as a non-profit organization in response to the need for community-based residential facilities for individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges to live with supported independence.
The organization originated from the concept to provide options away from state institutions and integrate these individuals into area communities. Established in partnership with the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities and backed with a start-up grant from the Cleveland Foundation, North Coast Community Homes first opened in 1984.
NCCH CEO & President, Chris West, shared, “It’s never been about the structures. Yes, North Coast Community Homes owns, maintains, and develops properties to provide housing for individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges – but we ARE NOT just landlords. It’s always been about the people we serve.”
Opening Doors event co-chair, John Bartels, pointed out that his involvement as a NCCH Board Member has allowed him to introduce many more people to the work and challenges of supported, independent living. He added, “It’s complex. But it’s also exciting. We see the opportunities to change homes, to add technology and options for each individual. It’s a fun time to be a part of this progress. This is why I have chosen to invest in the organization.”
Opening Doors was presented by ANCORA with Kristen and John Bartels, Heather and Mike Weingart, and the Smith Garofoli Group of Howard Hannah. The event included raffles and auctions led by Anne Kimmins and Renee Lanza. The gala event supports the operational efforts of North Coast Community Homes to provide housing, resources, and services to over 600 residents being served throughout Northeast Ohio.
