NCCH team members helped to paint the base colors to the “More Alike Than Different” mural taking shape in Cleveland’s Bellaire-Puritas Neighborhood. The mural's design will celebrate individuals living with disabilities while serving to create awareness and understanding of individuals living with Downs Syndrome.
The effort is being lead by Councilman Brian Kazy. “People with developmental disabilities are more alike than different,” said Councilman Kazy, who represents Ward 16. “We see many wonderful murals throughout the city representing all types of races, creeds and nationalities and this is our way of displaying support for an underserved and underrecognized community that needs just as much support as any other.”
The wall is being painted by Garrett Weider who also designed Bridge Blooms on Bridge Avenue and W. 48th Stree in Ohio City. Weider is hoping the splash of color will breathe freshenss into the area. “I’m switching the design up a little bit. It’s going to have all kinds of colors and flowers and mixing in some of the logos of the sponsors.” He added, “Having a whole bunch of these flowers that are all of these different colors and things is kind of representative of all of humanity to me.” Weider is hoping the mural will become a "selfie spot", getting people to stop buy and take pictures.
The project is being lead by Bellaire Puritas Development Corporation and the non-profit, the Up Side of Downs. Other organizations involved include Hyland Software and non-profit organizations North Coast Community Homes, The Arc of Greater Cleveland, UCP of Greater Cleveland, ADA Cleveland, Koinonia, Youth Challenge, New Avenues to Independence, Inc., and the HELP Foundation. Sherwin Williams has donated the paint for the project.
